Back in the late 1800s, people with mental illness were treated quite poorly. Massachusetts was ahead of its time when in 1877 it opened a “Worcester State Lunatic Hospital” to care for people with challenges. As times changed, this complex was renamed to the “Worcester State Hospital”.
In 1991 the building caught fire. By 2005 the state was ready to rebuild.
With the enormous history behind this complex, it was important to many people to preserve something of the structure. Through concerted effort, the clocktower was saved, as well as a round turret building. The clocktower had once been part of a larger building but now it is a standalone structure.
In this video you get a full walkaround view of the clocktower monument and then a distance view of the turret.
