In American Hustle, Jeremy Renner plays the critical role of Mayor Carmine Polito of Camden, New Jersey. This character is introduced via a political event which was filmed at the Worcester Memorial Auditorium in Worcester, Massachusetts.
The Worcester Memorial Auditorium was built in 1933 and is HUGE. For this scene they only used the front lobby area. The key feature of the lobby is an enormous mural done by famous American painter Leon Kroll. Kroll also painted works for the Department of Justice Building in Washington DC, the Shriver Hall at Johns Hopkins, and many other locations.
I include the snippets of film to show the comparison between what was filmed and what the Worcester Memorial Auditorium is like. They really didn’t change a thing here. The Aud is stunningly beautiful. There is incredible detail work on every wall, ceiling, and floor.
Unfortunately, the Worcester Memorial Auditorium is not currently open to visitors. I really hope the City of Worcester finds a way to put this gorgeous building to use going forward, so we can all appreciate its beauty.
